Background to the project

This project began in June 1993 in response to widespread demand for help over the weekend when normal support arrangements are unavailable. It has proved to be most popular and members are able to enjoy a good Sunday Roast for a very reasonable charge. The project also provides a supportative environment, especially for people who have problems in managing over the weekend without support.

The funding for the Sunday Lunch Club is part of a contractual agreement with Mansfield District Social Services, therefore we are only able to offer the service to people living in the Mansfield area.

Reasons for providing the service

For many people who are experiencing mental health difficulties, the weekend can be a lonely and stressful time.

Regular day care services seldom extend over this period and in some instances individual community care plans are not viable unless there is access to some support facility between Friday evening and Monday morning.

Previous experience has shown that the availability of a Lunch Club improves the quality of life for many people discharged from hospital.

How to apply for the service

Application for membership of the Sunday Lunch Club should be made by, or on behalf of, the individual and must include the recommendation of a professional person (i.e. a doctor, nurse, social worker etc.).

A person will be eligible for membership if he/she meets either of the following criteria:

  • is receiving or has received help because of any kind of mental health difficulty
  • is a current service user
